'The last scene' refers to the last frame of a film just before the fade-out. Usually from here on the music starts to swell, giving the film a final climax. Not infrequently, this time is accompanied by disappointment: you are no longer occupied by an entertainer, you are yourself again. By setting the last frame on pause, you never have to go back to the state of self-maintenance. You die and live.
